Students at Good Shepherd Catholic School in Hillsboro recently participated in Operation Sunscreen in honor of the people who serve our country.  The Principal's Council collected granola bars, individual drink mixes and sunscreen along with notes to be sent to Missouri National Guard soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.  These items will be put into Christmas care packages for the soldiers.

Sister Gail Buckman, SSND, a School Sister of Notre Dame and band director at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic School in south St. Louis, was the grand prize winner of the national “Share Your SmartMusic Story” contest, sponsored by MakeMusic. On Nov. 12 at a school assembly, Sister Gail was awarded $2,500 and a $500 gift certificate at J.W. Pepper (a sheet music retailer). Over 23 schools across the nation participated in an Internet Safety Night videoconference hosted by St. Clement of Rome School in Des Peres, on November 5.  Topics included online predators, cyberbullying, and identity theft.  Presenting were (pictured from left), Lt. Shrewsbury Mayor Bert Gates proclaimed November 2, 2009 as “Angela Heffner Day.”  Heffner, a third grade teacher at St. Michael the Archangel School in Shrewsbury, recently received a 2009 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. St. Michael the Archangel School educates children from pre-school through eighth grade. St. Michael’s goals include fostering the spiritual, academic and emotional growth of its students. St. Mark students show their support for the Missouri Humane Society! The first grade students at St. Mark recently organized a Blanket/Towel Drive in support of the animals at the Missouri Humane Society.  After collecting over 20 bags of blankets/towels, the students personally delivered them to the Humane Society at 1201 Macklind Ave. on October 26, 2009.

Emily Woolf, age 7, roared like a tiger for the camera after having her face painted during the Affton Days Parade festivities held at the First Baptist Church of Affton, located at Gravois and Mackenzie.  This outreach event offered free balloon animals, face paintings, food, snowcones, and a bounce house.

Malerie Smith of Affton, age 6, is captured catching her breath in the bounce house.  She received many compliments on her puppy dog face painting. There was excitement in the air at the First Baptist Church of Affton, Mackenzie and Gravios, during the Affton Day's Parade on September 19th.  Children couldn't resist lure of the bounce house, balloon animals, face paintings, hot dogs and snow cones given out at the corner of Gravois and Mackenzie; and parent's were thankful that all the activities and treats were free to parade spectators.
